Six Surefire Tells That You Just Moved to Austin
These are some of the easiest signs y'all can give
While I sometimes cosplay as an Austin local who’s antagonistic to outsiders, the truth is that no self-respecting road would thumb its nose at potential traffic gains. New customers are fantastic.
But that doesn’t mean I can’t slip into making fun of, say, Californians who’ve just moved to Circle C like its a cozy second skin for me.
With that in mind, here are six easy tells that will immediately out you, for better or worse, as a freshly-minted Austinite.
Saying “Hook Them”: It doesn’t have to be this one—there are plenty of other local axioms/slogans that could fit the bill—but there’s nothing quite like almost nailing a popular colloquialism, but not quite. Doing this unironically during a Longhorns game amongst new neighbors will be a record scratching moment, unless you’re with Aggies, in which case you’ll be showered with high fives.
