A Quick Q&A With Willie Nelson
The Austin musical legend was kind enough to answer a few of my questions about his life, our city, and more
Over the decades, Willie Nelson has become synonymous with Austin.
His incredible music career, dedicated activism, keen business sense, and laid-back way of living his life have all fit in perfectly here, and Willie is deeply woven into the fabric of Austin.
So, when he recently agreed to a short interview with me, I was understandably excited.
What most struck me was his optimism, both in general and as it applies to the ever-changing city so many of us call home. And it made me wonder—if Willie can remain upbeat in these uniquely challenging times, why can’t I try a bit harder to myself?
Let’s get to it. (Before we do, a huge thanks goes out to Annie D’Angelo, Willie’s partner in life and a super cool and talented lady in her own right, for facilitating this.)
Evil MoPac: What are your best memories of Austin and favorite things about the city in 2025?
Willie: Best memories of Austin: Living on our ranch, riding my horses & hanging with family/friends.
Favorite things about 2025 Austin: The Luck Reunion & being able to go down my driveway to do a show.

Evil MoPac: What advice would you give to a young musical artist trying to make a career out of it right now?
Willie: Don’t give up! If it’s what you came here to do—do it.
***
Evil MoPac: Fill in the blank. "If I could change one thing about Austin, it would be ______________."
Willie: Not one thing.
Evil MoPac: What is your favorite Austin area road?
Willie: Every road on my Ranch. (Editor’s Note: it was bit hurtful not hearing MoPac.)
***
Evil MoPac: Who are some of the current Austin (and beyond) musical artists you're listening to now?
Willie: Margo Price, Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Lily Meola, Southern Avenue, Lukas Nelson, Micah Nelson, and Waylon Payne.
***
Evil MoPac: The best thing about touring is ______________?
Willie: I love the crowds and making them happy.
Evil MoPac: The worst thing about touring is _______________.
Willie: What’s to hate? Beautiful bus, great crowds, doing what I’d do for free but getting paid for it.
***
Evil MoPac: Fill in the blank: "Austin's future looks _________________."
Willie: Great, it’s a great town.
He is probably the most optimistic person in Austin. We could all try being more positive. Thank you for sharing your interview. 🌻
Willie is a treasure!
